Delaware Governor Announces Job Cuts
DOVER, Del. (AP) ―
Delaware's governor says he's going to cut about 500 positionsmost of which are vacantto save more than $13 million and balance next year's budget.
Gov. Jack Markell says most of the cuts come from the state's largest agenciesthe Correction and Health and Social Services departments. But he says all departments lost some positions because personnel costs make up 48 percent of state expenses.
He says the next budget could be "more painful" than this year's. If the proposed cuts are included, Markell has eliminated more than 1,000 positions since January.
In a Monday teleconference with reporters, Markell said a September estimate of fee and tax revenues was below expectations.
