Delaware Lawmakers Reach Budget Agreement
DOVER, Del. (AP) ―
State lawmakers had
to work into the wee hours of the morning today before approving a budget for
the new fiscal year that began at midnight.
The traditional late-night session on the
legislature's final day dragged on later than expected after an $86 million
revenue package cobbled together by legislative leaders began to unravel last
week.
The package, designed to address a projected
shortfall of more than $200 million, included a provider tax on hospitals that
met resistance in the House, and a bill raising the licensing fee to sell
alcoholic beverages that was rejected by the Senate.
It was not until 2 a.m. that the budget cleared
the Senate on a 15-6 roll call. It was approved by the House 33-7 at 3:12 a.m.
The final gavel fell in the House just before 5 a.m.
With the sun rising, Gov. Ruth Ann Minner thanked
lawmakers for their work in presenting her a balanced budget, saying it's
not easy to make budget cuts or increase taxes.
