Farimount Park Celebrates Japanese Culture

PHILADELPHIA (CBS 3) ― Philadelphians headed to Fairmount Park on Sunday afternoon to celebrate blossoming cherry trees and Japanese culture.

Sakura Sunday, the Japanese tradition of revelry beneath the blossoming cherry trees, featured lived Japanese music, dance performances, martial arts demonstrations.

The weather was perfect for the colorful festival, and Mayor Nutter was on hand to participate in a Ceremonial Cherry Tree Planting.

Partners for the 2009 Festival include the City of Philadelphia, Fairmount Park Commission, Morris Arboretum of the University of Pennsylvania, and Shofuso Japanese House and Garden. Funding for the Festival is generated through proceeds from the annual Subaru Cherry Blossom Festival Gala and Silent Auction and individual and corporate sponsorships of cherry trees
