The days of driving while on a cell phone in Philadelphia are numbered. The city's crackdown on distracted drivers starts on Sunday. People have been given plenty of warning, as Walt Hunter explains, they aren't getting the message.
Driving and talking on his cell phone, John McMann experienced a new kind of call interrupt when he was pulled over Friday for chatting on his hand-held device. He received a warning from police, as will drivers for the next month.
However, beginning December 1, police will start issuing fines that begin at $75.
"It's that darned cell phone, but I understand, it makes sense," said McMann.
Many drivers like Lance Lee, who lives in Lawnside, New Jersey, where driving and talking is already illegal, have already taken steps to go hands free.
"I've already spent $100 for a blue tooth and now it is time to use it," said Lee.
Motorists given warnings Friday were upset, but grateful they did not receive tickets.
"It is $75 for the first offense, but very quickly goes up to $300," said Lt. Frank Vanore.
If you need to make an emergency call, police say just pull over.
