Mayor Nutter Signs City Zoning Legislation

Paves Way For Center City Casino

PHILADELPHIA (AP) ― Philadelphia's mayor has signed zoning legislation that would help plans to put a casino at a downtown shopping mall.

Residents of the nearby Chinatown neighborhood oppose plans for a casino at the Gallery. They sent Mayor Michael Nutter stacks of petitions opposing the zoning changes.

Nutter on Sunday signed bills that created a commercial entertainment district for the proposed Foxwoods casino. The legislation passed City Council last week.

The developers already have a license to build a slots parlor on the Delaware River waterfront in South Philadelphia. But because of fierce opposition, they agreed to consider moving it to the Gallery, a 1970s-era mall in a struggling retail corridor.

Nutter met with leaders of the Chinatown community on Saturday.

He says he plans to meet with them again on Thursday.
