CO Poisoning Sickens 31 At Delaware Co. Store

HAVERTOWN, Pa. (CBS 3) ― More than 30 people were taken to the hospital after apparently being exposed to carbon monoxide at a shopping center in Havertown.

Authorities said the incident happened at about 12:30 p.m. at a Super Fresh in the Manoa Shopping Center on West Chester Pike.

Authorities said exhaust fans in the building stopped working, causing gas to backup in the Super Fresh and a neighboring Rite Aid.

A total of 31 people, including a firefighter, were taken to area hospitals and at least one of the victims had to be transferred to a hospital with a hyperbaric chamber.

"Everyone on scene had some level of symptoms, some type of nausea, headache, that sort of vague symptom which are all associated with carbon monoxide poisoning," paramedics director Jim McCans said.

Officials said all of those sickened were expected to recover.

Super Fresh will remain closed while crews vent and clean the building. The Rite Aid has reopened.
