Servicing Your Car For Summer

PAOLI (CBS 3) ― Driving in 90 degree heat during the summer can easily bring your car down. Fortunately there are a number of checks you can do yourself before hitting the road that could save you in the long run.

Leonard Salvato of MainLine Tire & Service in Paoli said it is important to check the basics like air filters, windshield wipers and basic fluids.

If you can't tell which fluid is what when looking under the hood, Salvato had an few tips.

"Blue is always windshield washer solvent. Orange or yellow is always oil," he said.

But coolants can be tricky as there are a variety of kinds and colors.

"If you want to carry some coolant, you can pick up a bottle of universal. It can mix with virtually anything," Salvato said.

One of the biggest money savers for the summer months is riding on your wheels.

"Air pressure is the key. I tell people all the time, if you rotate your tires, check you air pressure…you'll get better gas mileage," Salvato said.

By purchasing a cheap tire pressure gauge, you can keep an eye on the air. Place the gauge on the tire stem and push in to get the pressure.

"You want to probably run them between 35 and 40 (pounds of pressure)," Salvato said.

It is also important to check the air in your spare, which should run at about 60 pounds.

A healthy car means a happier and less expensive summer trip.
