Police in Bucks County are investigating an apparent attempted suicide outside of an area school.
Authorities said a 78-year-old man shot himself in the head on the grounds of Pennridge High School in Perkasie just after 11 a.m. Wednesday.
While classes were in session at the time, police said no students were involved in or witnessed the incident.
In fact, most of the students had no idea the incident happened until school officials made an announcement.
Neighbors told CBS 3 the elderly man was upset over some recent medical news.
"He had no association with the school. He did live nearby," said Chief David Mettin of the Pennridge Police Department.
The man was found alive and flown to St. Luke's hospital in unknown condition. No additional injuries were reported.
"I was in my math class and there was an announcement. It was a kind of long announcement about what had happened," said freshman Laura Schoenmeier.
The school didn't lockdown when the incident happened. The shooting remains under investigation.
