Injured Delaware K9 Recovering Nicely

BRANDYWINE, Del. (CBS 3) ― A heroic Delaware police canine is recovering nicely after being shot multiple times by a suspect in New Castle County.

Diablo is still in intensive care following the shooting, but he is now walking, eating solid food and off oxygen support.

"This is an extraordinary dog. I am thankful for his recovery and thankful for the incredible team of doctors, nurses and technicians throughout Ryan who have worked with me and Diablo—most especially those in Penn's Intensive Care Unit," said Dr. Elaine Holmes.

Officers were called to the Chateau Orleans Apartment complex on Philadelphia Pike at about 12:40 a.m. after reports of a domestic dispute.

A female told police her ex-boyfriend, 34-year-old Eric Weit, was near her apartment after allegedly threatening to kill her.

Police sent a rookie K9 unit into a nearby wooded area after hearing a single gunshot. As officers were ending their search, then Diablo tracked down and engaged the suspect.

A bark from Diablo sent officers into cover as Weit opened fire. Despite two gunshot wounds, police said Diablo held tight to the suspect until getting the command to release.

Weit apparently fired several more shots, forcing officers to return fire, striking him multiple times in the torso. He was flown to Christiana Hospital where he underwent emergency surgery.

Diablo's partner rushed him to the Matthew Ryan Veterinary Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania where doctors performed surgery on a shattered hind leg.

Weit, previously wanted for minor traffic offenses, was released from Christiana Hospital late Friday evening and later arraigned and committed to Howard Young Prison after failing to post bail.

The incident remains under investigation.
