Philly Considering Bike Share Program

PHILADELPHIA (AP) ―

Philadelphia City Council plans to explore the benefits of a bike-share program.

Executive director Alex Doty of the Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia says users would pay a fee—either daily, weekly, or annually—and bikes would be checked out and tracked with a smart card.

Riders would be able to take a bike from any station and ride it one-way to any other station within the city.

Doty hopes to see hundreds of stations blanketing Philadelphia with more than 1,000 bikes.

Washington, D.C., is preparing to roll out a similar, though smaller, program. It will start with 10 stations and 120 bikes.

Philadelphia City Council has scheduled a hearing on the proposal Wednesday.
