A Stand For Hope: Alex's Lemonade
$891,740 In Pledges Generated!
PHILADELPHIA (CBS 3) ―
On Thursday, June 11, 2009, CBS 3 hosted a full day of fundraising for the Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation.
The "Alex Scott Phone Bank," a 15-hour fundraiser to raise funds for the Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation, generated $891,740 in pledges for pediatric cancer research thanks to corporate sponsors and Delaware Valley television viewers.
In addition to contributions from viewers, area businesses also contributed to the fundraiser with Applebee's leading the pack with a $ 275,000 pledge. Other corporate contributors included Just Born Candies, the makers of PEEPS, Country Time Lemonade, Elyse Ryan Jewelry, USA Beverage and TD Bank.
"The CBS family is proud to be the host and partner for such a special event," says President and General Manager Jon Hitchcock. "This is television at its best bringing people together to do good in the community."
CBS 3 is raising funds for the Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation, a unique charity that evolved from the front yard lemonade stand of four-year-old Alexandra Scott.
Since her passing in 2004, Alex's Lemonade Stand has blossomed into a nationwide fundraising movement to find a cure for childhood cancer.
Alex's parents, Liz and Jay Scott, along with other CBS 3 personalities and personalities from the CBS Radio stations, joined the hosts for the annual event.
The Alex Scott Phone Bank kicked off Lemonade Days 2009 (June 12-14) -- a day when thousands of people across the country will take a stand against pediatric cancer by hosting lemonade stands of their own.
"Despite the current state of the economy, we are continually amazed by the outpouring of generosity from Philadelphians and the Delaware Valley," says Liz Scott, Alex's mother. "It is that support that has made this CBS 3 fundraiser the most successful to date."
In honor of Lemonade Days Weekend, "Alex Scott: A Stand for Hope," a moving half hour special that tells Alex's story through her parents, her medical team at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and many of the people who were touched by her life, will also air Saturday, June 13 at 7 p.m. on CBS 3 and at 10:30 p.m. on The CW Philly. The show will be rebroadcast on Sunday, June 14 at 11 a.m. on CBS 3.
CBS 3 acknowledges the support of Toyota, Applebee's and The Malvern School in making this special fundraising effort possible. CBS 3 (KYW-TV) and The CW Philly 57 (WPSG-TV) are part of CBS Television Stations, a division of CBS Corporation.
