Officer Injured In Frankford Collision

PHILADELPHIA (CBS 3) ― A Philadelphia Police officer was injured after an alleged drunk driver slammed into his police cruiser in the Frankford section of the city early Thursday morning.

Police said an officer from the 15th District was responding to a call when his cruiser was struck by another vehicle at the intersection of Wakeling and Saul Streets.

The officer was taken to Hahnemann University Hospital with neck and back injuries. He was treated and later released.

Investigators are still investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash. The driver of the other vehicle, identified as Jamar Brown, is in police custody and is facing charges of driving under the influence.

Police said Brown, an unlicensed driver, barreled through the intersection and struck the police cruiser.

The crash marks the second time this week a Philadelphia Police officer was involved in a violent accident in the line of duty.

Sergeant Timothy Simpson was killed Monday when his cruiser was struck in Port Richmond. The suspect, William Foster, is believed to have been under the influence of drugs and alcohol at the time of the crash.
