Moorestown H.S. Student Killed In DUI Crash
MOORESTOWN (CBS 3) ―
Police believe alcohol was a factor in a Burlington
County crash that killed a Moorestown
High School student and injured two
others Sunday.
Moorestown Police officers discovered an overturned vehicle off of Garwood
Road in Moorestown at about
12:15 a.m.
Investigators said the car apparently traveled 100 feet off of the roadway
before rolling onto its side and striking a tree. Three teens, who were
all wearing their seatbelts, were found inside the vehicle.
Passenger Evan Welch, 18, a member of the swim, lacrosse and soccer teams, was
pronounced dead at the scene at 3:00 a.m.
by the Burlington County Medical Examiner.
A 17-year-old riding in the front of the vehicle was transported to Cooper
Trauma Center
with where he underwent surgery on fractured bones.
The driver, 18-year-old Daniel Friedmann of Baldwin
Hills Place, was transported to Virtua
Hospital with minor injuries.
He was treated and released.
Police said Friedman was charged with driving while under the influence and
reckless driving.
"Beer cans were scattered around the scene that we know came from the interior of the vehicle," said Moorestown Police Sgt. Randy Pugh.
"We need as a community to examine drinking and driving. And to renew,
perhaps, revise, our efforts at curtailing that. Clearly this is a wake-up
call," said Moorestown Superintendent John Bach.
School officials said grief counselors will be available at the high school
Monday to help students and faculty. Funeral arrangements have not yet been
announced.
