U.S. Rep Introduces International Megan's Law

Representative Chris Smith Announces New Legislation For Megan's Law

Hamilton, NJ (CBS 3) ― Representative Chris Smith (R-Hamilton) announced new legislation Monday to expand and enhance the original New Jersey State and federal 'Megan's Law.'

The law, which requires public notification of convicted sex offenders living in the community, was prompted by the 1994 kidnapping, rape, and brutal murder of seven year old, Megan Kanka of Hamilton, New Jersey.

"What happened in Hamilton was a tragedy beyond belief. Megan's Law has been an effective tool in making sure people are notified when a convicted sex offender moves into their neighborhood. Yet, to date we have no idea when a sex predator travels into this country and likewise when American sex offenders travel abroad," said Smith, the senior member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee.

Smith's 'International Megan's Law' will establish a system that notifies government officials when a known sex offender is entering the United States or traveling abroad.

Foreign nationals who have committed a sex offense will be denied entry into the United States and face strict penalties for non-compliance.

Additionally, the new law will require State Departments to submit yearly reports regarding the law's international notification system.
