N.J. Family Knits 'Hats 4 Heroes' Overseas
SEWELL, N.J. (CBS 3) ―
Thanksgiving is a time for families to come together, but one South Jersey family is giving back to those fighting in the War Zone.
"It's nice to make something for somebody," Sewell resident Lee Burkett said. "I done 14 hats so far and this is my 15th one."
Armed with a knitting needle and love for the men and women overseas, Lee and her family have decided to help out an organization called "
Hats4Heroes."
Lee and her granddaughter Abby Brown are making hats for soldiers so that they can wear them under their helmets.
"Wearing the helmet on their heads is uncomfortable," Lee said.
A pattern was invented for a hat to be worn under the soldier's helmet that will keep them warm and comfortable.
"It's an easy pattern to do and it takes basically a day to make," Lee explained.
The idea began on the internet and has grown ever since then.
"According to the email, there's been 5,500 hats already sent. So anybody who's interested who can knit or crochet goes to a worthy cause," Lee said.
Once the hats are made, they are shipped to service men and women overseas with a bag of M&M's inside.
"If someone doesn't know how to knit or crochet, a (monetary) donation or just picking up a couple bags of M&M's, that would be great," Lee said.
