Controversy Over Pregnant N.J. Officer Quelled

Ocean Township is offering a decorated pregnant patrolwoman a desk job.

A deal would end the furor that erupted when the Monmouth County community denied Officer Sonia Henriques' request because she is concerned about putting her unborn child at risk. Her doctor agreed. She is two months pregnant.

At a council meeting Monday night, Mayor William Larkin said the township didn't have a policy. Two of the department's 62 officers are women.

Her union said she was told to stay on patrol or take an unpaid leave of absence.

The mayor tells the Asbury Park Press the township wants Henriques to stay on desk duty until she goes on maternity leave.

Larkin says the police union's lawyer is reviewing the agreement, which he expects to be reached on Wednesday.

Henriques was awarded a medal of valor for persuading a person who had pointed a loaded gun at her to surrender in December.
