Series Of Overnight Shootings Plague The City

PHILADELPHIA (CBS 3) ― A series of overnight shootings left some injured and others dead throughout Philadelphia early Sunday morning.

Police believe a tan SUV, abandoned at the scene, belongs to the suspect who shot a man outside the pizzeria in North Philadelphia around 3:50 a.m.

An employee of a pizza shop went to tell a nearby officer that there was an altercation at the store near Delaware and Spring Garden Streets.

"It started inside then it started going outside. Four gunshots and he got hit four times," one eyewitness said.

While trying to flee the 26-year-old victim, a black male, was shot. He attempted to drive away in one of the delivery vehicles before coming to halt yards away.

The victim was transported to an area hospital where he is listed in critical condition.

Investigators located a gun about 50 yards from the location from where it was fired. But the suspect managed to escape. What sparked the incident is unknown.

In a separate shooting just after 12:30 a.m. in West Kensington and on the 200 block of East Willard Street police shot and wounded a man who they said had threatened officers. The man was taken to Temple University Hospital in critical condition.

Officers are permitted to use deadly force to defend themselves or someone else in danger.

There were also shootings overnight at 18th and Butler Streets and Erie and Germantown Streets. There is no word on those victims' identities or conditions. The details surrounding the shootings were not available.

Just after 11:30pm police received a report of a double shooting in the 2100 block of North 31st and Westmont Streets in the city's Strawberry Mansion section.

Police believe there was an altercation between two men. One was killed while the other is being sought by authorities.

All the overnight incidents remain under investigation as police continue to sift through the clues.
