A church leader was killed and two others injured after a gunman opened fire during a fundraiser in New Castle County Sunday evening.
Authorities said the shooting happened inside a crowded banquet room at the Christiana Hilton Hotel in the 100 block of Continental Drive in Newark at about 7 p.m.
Approximately 80 people were inside the hall during a fundraiser for the Saint Mary Coptic Church in hopes of building a new facility in Elkton, Maryland.
As the committee head finished his speech, police said 58-year-old Monir George of Whitehall Township, Pennsylvania fired three shots, one of which struck 63-year-old Malak Michael.
Michael suffered a single gunshot wound to the upper chest. He was rushed to Christiana Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Several witnesses restrained George until police arrived. Officers recovered two semi-automatic handguns and 150 rounds of ammunition from the scene.
George and a Good Samaritan, who was injured during the incident, were taken to Christiana Hospital to be treated for non-life threatening injuries. No additional injuries were reported.
George, a member of the church, was allegedly upset over the group's policies and the building of the new facility. He was formally charged with murder and related offenses and is being held without bail at the Howard Young Correctional Institute.
