Thieves Target Gas Pumps At Area Stations
PHILADELPHIA (CBS 3) ―
With gas prices rising and the state of the economy in disarray, even thieves
are resorting to more creative measures. At least two Wawa filling stations in
the Philadelphia
area have fallen victim to a string of recent credit card skimming scams.
"Just like any identity theft, until you see it on your credit card or bank
statements, it's really important to check for any usual transactions," said Ela
Voluck of AAA.
Thieves place a device over the card reader and can instantly record the
information on the card.
Wawa officials have confirmed that such incidents have
been recorded at the Wawa filling stations in Bristol Twp., Bucks County
and another in New Castle,
Del.
"Some of these devices look exactly like the card readers at the pumps,"
warns Voluck. "If you notice that the card reader looks suspicious, don't use
it."
Experts who have been alerted of recent thefts in the area recommend that
consumers pay inside of the stores or use cash whenever possible.
Wawa has
agreed to increase security in high risk areas and check the card readers at
all of their filling stations.
