Philly's Own 'Heavy Metal Hookers'
PHILADELPHIA (CBS 3) ―
When it comes to rock and roll, no one shakes things up quite like the Philly Roller Girls. With three local teams and one all-star squad, these skater babes recently rolled their way to a top ten spot in the national league.
You might expect hard core brutality with team names like 'Broad Street Butchers, Heavy Metal Hookers and Philthy Britches,' but these hell bent broads serve up more sunshine than you'd expect.
Just ask roller girl Vanessa Jackson or as her teammates call her, "Eurothrash."
"Take the forty most interesting girls you've ever met in your whole life and they're the Philly Roller girls. We are mothers, daughters, sisters. We are girlfriends, wives and mothers and we are all friends," said Jackson.
With ten girls on the track, five on each team, the object of the game is to jam your way through a human cluster of roller girls.
Jackson explains, "The jammers are pretty much the human ball. The object is to get your jammer through the pack as many times as possible while keeping the other group's jammer from doing so."
The intense contact gives way to lots of bumps and bruises, not to mention broken bones.
"You definitely have to be able to take a hit, it's just part of the game," says Jackson.
Still, these ladies leave their aggression at the rink.
"In the heat of the moment, you want to hit them so hard it makes their Mom cry, then at the end, you just want to hug them," said Jackson.
