Study: 200K Adults In Philadelphia Without Diploma
PHILADELPHIA (CBS 3) ―
A new study released Monday shows more than 52 percent of Philadelphians lack necessary workforce literacy skills.
The Philadelphia Workforce Investment Board conducted the study and presented the following statistics:
- More than 202,000 adults in Philadelphia have not obtained a high school diploma.
- 52.2 percent of working-age Philadelphians are below the literacy standard.
- Those adults can only compete for a third of the jobs available in today's economy.
The CEO of PWIB, Sallie Glickman, told CBS3, "The great side of this is that there's a lot that can be done. We're poised in Philadelphia to do all kinds of things to move the needle on those numbers."
There are a number of free programs offered in the city to assist willing adults.
The Center for Literacy is one option where already thousands have turned to for help in increasing their literacy skills and earning their high school diplomas.
Additional information about the various programs as well as the complete study results are all available at
