Weekend Violence Leaves 5 Dead

PHILADELPHIA (CBS 3) ― A rash of violence left five people dead in separate incidents throughout the city of Philadelphia this weekend.

The deadly weekend began inside Charley B's Bar & Grill on the 4900 block of N. Broad Street in Logan at about 1:45 a.m. Sunday morning. Police said a 37-year-old man was killed after being shot in the face inside the bar. A second 27-year-old was rushed to Einstein Hospital in critical condition with a gunshot wound to the back.

A short distance from crime scene, police said a 66-year-old male was beaten to death by a female in a separate incident at about 4 a.m. Police said the man was struck in the head outside a Sunoco gas station on the 5000 block of N. Broad Street. He was rushed to Einstein Hospital where he was pronounced dead just before 5:30 a.m. The woman was taken into custody at the scene.

Over an hour earlier, police said a 44-year-old man was shot multiple times on the 6800 block of Limekiln Pike in West Oak Lane at about 2:48 a.m. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene. No arrests have been made.

At about 2 p.m. Sunday afternoon, a male with no vital signs was rushed to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. Police said he had been shot in the back multiple times near 43rd and Market Streets.

One 16-year-old was killed and a second injured after gunfire erupted on Cambria and Amber Streets at about 6 p.m. Police said one of the teens was taken to Einstein Hospital while the second died at the scene.

Mayor Nutter spate of violence saying residents should not fear for their safety.

"Most of these situations the individuals know each other. These are targeted shootings, not wild random acts. These are individuals who are after some person for some particular reason," said Mayor Nutter

Additional violent incidents:

- A 16-year-old was shot at 3rd and Mentor Streets in the Feltonville neighborhood of Philadelphia at 11:23 p.m. Saturday. He is listed is stable condition at Episcopal Hospital with a gunshot wound to his hand. There is no word on the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

- A 23-year-old man was shot in the abdomen and is listed in critical condition at Temple Hospital after a shooting at 7th and Allegheny Streets in West Kensington shortly before midnight Saturday. Authorities recovered a gun believed to be used in the shooting and two males were taken into custody.

- A 24-year-old male was transported to Frankford Torresdale Hospital and listed in stable condition after a shooting on the 3600 block of Decatur Street in the Holmesburg section of Philadelphia at about 1:43 a.m. Sunday.

- Four people were injured after gunfire erupted near 3rd and Snyder Streets around 2 a.m. Authorities said an altercation at McDaniels Bar at 2nd and Snyder Streets led to the violence. A male in his 20s and a 25-year-old were taken to Jefferson Hospital in critical condition. A 22-year-old was treated and released for graze wound to the back. A second 22-year-old was sustained a gunshot wound to the shoulder and is listed in stable condition. One suspect was reportedly taken into custody.

All of the shootings remain under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call police.
