Trans Fats Tossed Out Of Citizens Bank Park
PHILADELPHIA (CBS 3) ―
While the peanuts and cracker jacks may stay the same, there will be a big menu change at Citizens Bank Park when Phillies fans pack the stadium on Opening Day.
ARAMARK, the food service provider for concession stands at the stadium, announced they will be tossing out Trans Fats from cooking oils.
"This year, the whole ballpark, every restaurant, every concession stand, everywhere in the ballpark is all zero Trans Fat," stadium concession manager Kevin Tedesco said.
The Philadelphia-based company is making the switch in order to comply with the ban on Trans Fats which goes into effect in the fall.
The substitute is Mazola ZT, which is a cooking oil containing no Trans Fats. So at every ballpark food location, all frying products like french fries, chicken tenders and the ever popular crabfries will be soaking in healthier oil.
When asked why he was making the change, Tedesco said: "Obviously it is on everybody's minds eating healthier, living longer, it is something we have thought about for a long time."
Tedesco actually tested the new cooking oil at the park last year. He even gave it a try at a few of the ballpark's food locations during the '06 season. He said just about no Phillies fan noticed the difference.
Fans can still grab a hot dog and a brew, but additional menu items will be added such as chipotle chicken pizzas and vegetarian steaks.
