Phillies One Away From Milestone 10,000th Loss

E-Mail Phillies Phan Story With Photo

PHILADELPHIA (CBS 3) ― The Philadelphia Phillies are just one loss away from reaching a historic milestone as they would become the most losing team in any sport.

Currently, the Phillies have lost 9,999 games since their first game on May 1, 1883.

The five-digit figure has 610 WIP Sportsradio personality Anthongy Gargano impressed.

"The next closest team is 1,000 losses away. You're talking about six seasons. It's amazing, it's such a feat," he said.

Although the presence of loss No. 10,000 is hanging over their heads, the Phillies said they are paying little attention to it.

"It's no big deal," infielder Wes Helms said. "Other organizations that are around as long as the Phillies have been are going to eventually reach 10,000 losses."

Devoted fans are embracing the approaching milestone with the website www.celebrate10000.com started by Charlie DeBow.

"It's more about celebrating the fans and the fact that we're still loyal and passionate about this team even though for the past 125 years they've only won one World Series and basically have been losers," DeBow said.

All the publicity surrounding loss No. 10,000 has worn out Philadelphia players and even made them a little sensitive to the subject.

"It's not worth talking about," said Chase Utley. "This team has been around a long time. There isn't much to say about it."
