Philadelphia Magazine: Sewing The New 'In' Thing
PHILADELPHIA (CBS 3) ―
First it was knitting -- everyone clacking away with needles and yarn. Now sewing is "in" according to Philadelphia Magazine's October issue.
That sewing class that lots of us suffered through in high school is now the latest trend in hand-made crafts. And as Liz Keptner reports, you don't have to repeat "Home Ec" to learn to stitch.
Tucked along the streets of Narberth is Cloth & Bobbin -- a fabric and sewing boutique where bolts of color, quirky buttons, ribbons and notions inspire hand-made creations.
Owner Johanna Hertz, fluent in needle and thread, opens her shop to students who want to learn to sew and quilt.
"Usually it's because they have a good memory of a grandmother or great-grandmother or someone in the family who did it," explains Johanna.
Johanna's sewing students range from 8 years old to adult.
"This is just straight line machine quilting using a walking foot," said Johanna as she demonstrated a basic quilting stitch. "Sometimes people do it a little fancier using all kinds of circles and swirls."
Philadelphia Magazine calls sewing the "new micro-trend in the hand-made cool movement."
And the success of Johanna's store full of pins and needles, fabrics and patterns is proof.
"People that I've taught in a beginning class who are amazingly accomplished in their own lives, like a transplant surgeon or other careers, make a pillowcase and they're the happiest people in the world," says Johanna.
So join a sewing circle, find your inner craft and maybe even a new friend at Cloth & Bobbin.
"It's a place for people to get together and talk to each other that's social but not a restaurant or a bar," said Johanna. "It's a nicer way to get together."
