Fixes Promised For GPS System In Philadelphia Cabs

PHILADELPHIA (AP) ― Philadelphia Parking Authority officials are admitting what many cabbies have been saying for two years: that the global positioning system installed in taxis needs to be fixed.

Ever since cabbies were ordered to put the GPS system in their taxis in 2006, many have complained that the devices don't work very well.

Drivers don't get good directions, and the authority can't monitor their locations as hoped.

Jim Nye heads the PPA's Taxi and Limo Division. He says the vendor, a company called VTS, recently installed fixes which will be tested for two months.

If that doesn't work, Nye says, the city will go to another vendor. And Nye says the vendor won't be paid until that GPS system is working properly.
