A routine traffic stop ended with a Pennsylvania State Trooper and a Tinicum Township officer being dragged on I-95 Monday afternoon.
The incident played out near Widener University on Interstate 95 in Tinicum Township, Delaware County.
According to police, the State Trooper was interviewing the driver of a black Kia outside the car when a Tinicum Township police officer arrived as back-up.
"The Trooper went and started to talk to the passenger who was still inside the vehicle," Trooper Jonathan Sunderlin said.
Investigators said the State Trooper spotted a gun on the passenger and called it out to the Tinicum officer.
"The driver was actually able to fight his way back into the vehicle, the Tinicum officer and the Trooper both tried to pull the two occupants outside the car, the driver put the car in gear and started to drive away," Trooper Sunderlin explained.
Both officers were dragged and thrown off the car, but not before the Trooper shot the passenger in the leg.
"The Trooper and the officer jumped back in their cars and initiated a pursuit," Trooper Sunderlin said.
Following the shooting, the suspects drove to an area near Widener University where they ditched the Kia. The pair flagged down a Good Samaritan for a ride to Crozer-Chester Medical Center for treatment.
"They were able to locate them, the two men arrived at the hospital, they were both taken into custody by Chester City Police," Trooper Sunderlin said.
The incident remains under investigation.
