North Wildwood Deaths Under Investigation
N. WILDWOOD, N.J. (CBS 3) ―
Two people are dead and another injured after struggling in the waters of North Wildwood Tuesday evening.
Rescuers were called to the Hereford Inlet after reports of a woman and two others having problems while swimming in the ocean just before 6 p.m.
Crews immediately located a 15-year-old girl from Middletown, Connecticut and pulled her from the waves. She was taken to an area hospital and is expected to be OK.
The Wildwood Beach Patrol called for assistance while searching for the remaining swimmers, who were in the ocean while lifeguards were off-duty.
A rescue boat crew from Coast Guard Station Cape May, N.J., a rescue boat crew from Coast Guard Station Townsend Inlet, N.J., and a rescue helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Atlantic City, N.J., aided in the search.
A young child was quickly located and rescuers initiated CPR. The unidentified child was pronounced dead at Cape Regional Medical Center.
After nearly an hour of searching, the Coast Guard found the body of 27-year-old Jamilah Watkins of South Carolina.
An autopsy is being performed on the victims to determine the exact cause of death. The relation of all three swimmers is currently unknown.
