New Castle County Police are asking residents to be on high alert after an older man reportedly tried to lure an 11-year-old girl into his car on Tuesday.
The young victim was walking on Green Street near the Claymont Library when the suspect approached her at about 2 p.m. As she was walking, an elderly male holding a cane came from the driver's side of dark colored SUV.
The suspect asked the girl to go with him so she could play with his granddaughter.
When the girl replied by saying she does not talk to or go with strangers, the suspect offered her a bag of candy. He continued by reassuring the girl that it was okay and they would not tell anyone.
While the man was trying to convince her to get into the vehicle, the girl observed a second subject sitting inside whose face was covered by a hooded sweatshirt.
When the elderly suspect approached the girl, she ran off to her home and told her mother about the incident.
