Downingtown East Mourns Loss Of Student

DOWNINGTOWN, Pa. (CBS 3) ― A car crash claimed the life of a Downingtown East High School student and left two other teenagers critically injured.

The accident happened Sunday at about 1 p.m. in the 300 block of Byers Road in Upper Uwchlan Township.

Authorities said Mohammadreza Daneshpooy, 17, of Chester Springs, was driving a 1994 Acura when it left the road and struck a tree.

According to authorities, Daneshpooy, a Downingtown East football player, died at the scene. His passengers, 18-year-old Christopher Evons of Chester Springs, and Christopher Layne, 18, of Glenmoore, suffered traumatic injuries.

"He was a mature, happy, kid who was a pleasure to be around. He had a certain energy about him that was infectious," said athletic director Jack Helm, describing Daneshpooy.

Front seat passenger Evons, also a student at Downingtown East, was flown by medical chopper to Chester Crozier Medical Center where he was last listed in critical condition.

Layne, a rear passenger in the car, was flown to Hahnemann University Hospital where was listed in serious but stable condition.

CBS 3 has learned Layne, a star football player and athlete at Malvern Prep, was expected to play lacrosse for the University of North Carolina next year.

Downingtown East has offered counseling for students and faculty and canceled their next football game with their rivals, Downingtown West.

"The three students involved in the accident, were friends to many students in both of our high schools, and we all know from experience, how difficult it can be to lose a friend," said Principal Paul Hurley.

Although the cause of the crash remains under investigations, authorities believes speed may have played a role.
