A bank robbery suspect surrendered to police after fleeing into a furniture store and holding police at bay for more than two hours in Burlington County.
Police said the incident began when a suspect robbed a TD Bank branch located on Kresson Road and Route 73 in Voorhees at about 2 p.m.
Shortly after the bank robbery, neighbors spotted a suspicious man in the woods and called police.
"One of our officers observed the suspect back there, ordered him to stop, a foot chase began and the suspect ran into the front of the business," Lt. Walt Miller of the Evesham Township Police Department explained.
Miller said the suspect entered the front of the La-Z-Boy store on Route 73 around 3 p.m. Four employees and a customer inside the store were safely evacuated by officers.
Officer surrounded the building and the suspect held police at bay for several hours. Officers attempted to make contact with the suspect inside the building, but he did not respond, and officers entered the building.
"He was hiding in the ceiling, in the bathroom area and he was removed from the ceiling and taken into custody," Lt. Miller said.
He surrendered without incident shortly before 5:30 p.m. No one was injured during the incident.
Police found a gun, stolen money and a change of clothes the suspect allegedly ditched in a wooded area behind the store.
The suspect has not been identified, but investigators said he acted alone.
Traffic on busy Route 73 was detoured around the shopping center where the furniture store is located.
The incident remains under investigation.
