Neighborhood Remembers Fallen Officer
PHILADELPHIA (CBS 3) ―
Hundreds of people from Port Richmond have been gathering around the scene of Sgt. Stephen Liczbinski's final moments.
Residents have been forming an ever growing memorial for the 12-year veteran and father of three.
A vigil, which included members of Sgt. Liczbinski's family, was held Monday evening.
Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey said visiting the scene was a family decision.
"I think it's a good decision to actually see what the community has established and to know a lot of people support and love them," Ramsey said.
The family embraced members of the community who attempted to assist Sgt. Liczbinski following the shooting.
People visited the memorial Monday morning leaving mementos and moments of silence for the fallen officer.
"I have been here since Saturday just to pay my respects because I know they have a hard job to do protecting us," resident John Gerrett said. "For something like this to happen, it's just awful, I feel for his wife and his kids and the entire police department."
Officer Gary Skerski, who was killed in the line of duty in 2006, lived just a few blocks from Liczbinski's memorial, reminding residents of the harsh realities faced by Philadelphia police officers.
Port Richmond resident, Karen Maminski shed tears at the memorial because her husband is a police officer.
"Every day, it's there in your head but you kind of put it in the back of your head. You always wait for a phone call, hopefully you don't get that phone call," said Karen.
