Muslim Cleric Fighting Deportation In N.J. Court

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) ―

It's judgment day for an influential Muslim cleric in New Jersey.

Imam Mohammad Qatanani is scheduled to appear in federal immigration court today to fight deportation.

Qatanani has been in the U.S. since 1996 and has headed the Islamic Center of Passaic County. He was instrumental in reaching out to law enforcement agencies after the Sept. 11 terror attacks.

Immigration authorities say Qatanani didn't disclose a conviction in an Israeli military court on his citizenship application. The imam says he was convicted in absentia and not notified.

Hundreds of Muslims are expected to gather outside the federal court building in Newark to show their support.

The trial is scheduled to last through Monday.
