Authorities are getting high-tech in their search for two goose hunters who went missing during a trip near the Delaware Bay over the weekend.
State Police along with the U.S. Coast Guard are planning to use boats equipped with sonar in the search for Jerry Piorkowski, 59, who owns Poohale Travel Service in Port Richmond, and Joseph Karamuz, 69, an E.R. doctor at Holy Redeemer Hospital in Pennsylvania.
The two men, along with 45-year-old Janusz Toryfter of Princeton, New Jersey, were reported missing Sunday after they did not return home from a Cumberland County hunting trip.
Rescuers discovered Toryfter's body near an abandoned 12-foot-long boat Monday.
Officials believe the three men began a goose hunting expedition near Husted-Bateman Road in Fairfield.
After a day of searching, a Coast Guard helicopter spotted a deceased individual near Back Creek and an overturned boat was found 200 yards away in marshland.
"This boat was not geared up to hunt out of, so I am assuming what they did is take the boat out and hunted somewhere on the meadows," said New Jersey State Police Sgt. David Bodine.
State Police and the Coast Guard continued their search for Piorkowski and Karamuz Monday, but were forced to postpone their efforts at about 4 p.m. with the changing tide.
State police said their chances of survival are slim.
