Authorities Bust 'Robin Hood' Gas Scam

PHILADELPHIA (CBS 3) ― A suspect who sold gas at half-price was not trying to help other drivers with soaring prices, but rather he was trying to help himself.

Police said Michael Myers filled up the tanks of over 40 drivers for half price using a corporate credit card. Myers allegedly earned over $25,000 in cash from the "Robin Hood" gas scam.

Authorities said Myers made the half price offers at area gas stations between November and January.

"I mean if you happened to be in line when Mr. Myers was at the pump it was your lucky day," Plymouth Township Detective Bob Hager said. "Great deal for them and a great deal for him until he got caught."

An accountant notified police of the alleged gas scam after noticing the growing charges. Investigators set up surveillance and witness drivers literally diving for the pumps at the word of cheap gas.

There are now indications that Myers is not the only person taking advantage of drivers' financial struggles with rising gas prices.

Bob Tini said a person was attempting to sell half price gas at a South Philadelphia gas station last week.

"I was at the pump. He said 'Hey do you want to fill up for half price?' and I said, 'No.' It sounded too good to be true," gas customer Bob Tini said.

Myers is currently facing charges of theft, receiving stolen property and related offenses.
