N.J. Forest Fire Halfway Controlled

SHAMONG, N.J. (AP) ― A busy state highway that runs along the edge of a forest fire in south Jersey was reopened Thursday afternoon after smoke abated enough to allow traffic to drive past.

Route 206 was reopened at 12:15 p.m. as firefighters declared they have contained 50 percent of a forest fire that charred 1,800 acres of New Jersey's Pinelands.

The road had been closed since the fire broke out Tuesday afternoon.

The fire is holding in a remote area where Atlantic, Burlington and Camden counties converge.

No buildings are threatened.

Firefighters had the blaze 50 percent contained as of midday Thursday.

"The situation is starting to look a little better," said Forest Fire Service spokesman Bert Plante. "We're starting to get a handle on it."

Plante said firefighters do not expect the blaze to travel much beyond its present boundaries unless there is a sudden increase in winds.

Several smaller brush fires broke out Thursday along Route 195 in Howell Township, but were considered minor, Plante said.
