Philly Zoo Gets Friendly With Greener Prints
PHILADELPHIA (CBS 3) ―
The Philadelphia Zoo out its green paw forward with a new initiative to help reduce greenhouse gases. The hi-tech program can cut-back on harmful footprints we leave behind.
It was the latest addition to the
Philadelphia Zoo and like most new arrivals it's drawing quite a crowd and getting rave reviews.
"It's a good thing, I guess to save the environment," one zoo visitor said.
It is called Footprints. The web-based program is designed to help people learn about ways to protect the environment and give them a better understanding about global warming and other things that can harm the environment.
"Burning fossil fuels which are coal, natural gas and oil are the big reasons why there are so many CO2 emissions are in the air," Conservation Specialist Valerie Peckham said.
Peckham said the zoo is the perfect place to get a program off the ground, because it's a way to make show the effect the environment has on animals and wildlife.
The project is also designed to protect endangered animals like the orangutan. Kids are encouraged to log on and do their part to protect the earth, something they dug into Wednesday by planting a tree.
"My family's pretty web savvy and I think it would be a good thing especially to go on with your kids to check it out," Amy Brown of Swarthmore said.
The web site's most unique feature, allows you to calculate how much carbon dioxide one is emitting in their daily life. It is called "Carbon footprint"
"I would definitely want to whether I'm doing the right, we'll say the earth-healthy things, things that are helping the Earth, definitely" Tierney Thomas said.
Organizers hope others will follow in Philadelphia's footsteps to create greener cities, and protect the land for future generations.
