Fire At Deptford Firehouse Under Investigation

DEPTFORD, N.J. (CBS 3) ― Crews battled a two-alarm blaze at firehouse in Gloucester County Sunday evening.

Officials said when fire broke out inside the firehouse, none of the volunteers firefighters were on hand at the time to realize their own station was up in flames.

"We saw the flames and no one was on the street at all so we just kind of e-braked it into the parking lot and jumped out of the car," eyewitness Jon Matinog said.

Eyewitnesses phoned in the emergency to 911 operators who were apparently confused by the irony.

"They were a little iffy about it like they were saying is the fire department on fire. But I just went along with it and eventually my friend here got everybody to just get a call," 911 caller Eric Fekete said.

First responding firefighters pulled both of their own two engines away from the danger while using one to douse the flames.

"We came out with heavy water supply through the front window and through the front door," Deptford Fire Department Chief Ron Newman said.

Several fire companies responded to the blaze and managed to save the apparatus and fire gear in the firehouse from serious damage.

The fire was contained to the station's rec room.

"We had heavy fire blowing out of the rec room windows, which is the front window, heavy fire through the rec room area and through the roof," Newman said.

Despite the damages, the fire house will remain in service with no interruptions. Fortunately, no one was hurt in the fire.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
