Reward Doubled In Rowan Student's Murder

GLASSBORO, N.J. (CBS 3) ― Prosecutors announced a $50,000 increase in the reward designed to bring the person who killed a Rowan University student to justice.

This will be the first holiday season Donnie Farrell's family has to spend without him.

It has been almost two months since someone robbed and killed the 19-year-old Rowan University student, and since the attack more than 70 leads have poured into the police department.

"This type of crime can be cracked with one good lead," Gloucester County Prosecutor Sean Dalton said.

And as investigators work to sort through those leads, news of the reward in the case was substantially increased.

Initially, $50,000 was offered after the October 27 fatal beating.

Morris County, where Farrell is from, the Gloucester County Prosecutor's Office and Rowan University have contributed to the reward.

Investigators believe a man captured on convenience store surveillance video camera, wearing a red and light gray hooded sweatshirt, may be responsible for Donnie's murder.

During a press conference Wednesday, investigators dressed a mannequin in the same clothing as one of the assailants, described as the high-end sweatshirt is a Coogi Heritage brand, adorned with a British flag.

Prosecutors believe someone out there knows who Donnie Farrell's killer is and the victim's mother, Kathy Farrell, pleaded for the capture of the suspects.

"We urge these men to and anyone with information about Donnie's death to contact the authorities. Anyone wanting to remain anonymous in provide us information can do so," Kathy said.

The reward now stands at $100,000 for information leading to an arrest and conviction in the case.

Students are hoping the increased reward money will help solve the case.

"I think eventually after it gets high enough, someone's going to talk," one student said.

"Maybe that will encourage someone to speak out, I hope someone will speak out," sophomore Diane Frank said.

The reward is most ever offered in a Gloucester County crime.

A 24-hour tip line and confidential e-mail address have been established for anyone with information on the attack. The telephone number is 856-307-7180. The e-mail address is mcu@co.gloucester.nj.us
