Officer Recovering After Deptford Crash

DEPTFORD (CBS 3) ― A Gloucester County police officer is recovering after he was seriously injured after a head-on collision late Wednesday night.

Police said 24-year-old Deptford Police Officer Gary Wurst was involved in a crash with a white Ford Explorer on Delsea and Lexington Drives at about 11:40 p.m.

Authorities said Officer Wurst was reporting back to headquarters at a normal rate of speed to help with the booking of a suspect at the time of the crash.

The driver of the Explorer, 19-year-old Andrea Paton was making a left turn when she collided with the front end of Officer Wurst's vehicle. The resulting crash sent the officer's cruiser off the roadway and into a tree, officials said.

Rescue crews had to free Officer Wurst from his vehicle and he was rushed to
Cooper University Hospital in critical condition.

Officials said Wurst was taken in for emergency surgery. He is expected to make a full recovery.

Patton was transported to Kennedy Memorial with non-lifethreatening injuries.

Authorities said it does not appear drugs or alcohol were a factor in the accident.

New Jersey State Police and the Gloucester County Prosecutor's Office are assisting with the investigation.
