Officers Make Special Rush Hour Delivery

PHILADELPHIA (CBS 3) ― Two Philadelphia Police officers went above and beyond the call of duty as they made a special rush hour delivery in the back seat of their patrol car.

While on patrol on the 1200 block of Huntingdon Street in North Philadelphia Wednesday evening, Officers James Pembrooke and Charles Waters came across a pregnant female with labor pains.

The two quickly realized the baby was not going to wait for the 37-year-old mother to get to the hospital.

"At that point right there, I kind of realized that we weren't going to be able to transport her, she was going to have the baby right then and there," Officer James Pembrooke said.

Officer Pembrooke asked neighbors to grab some towels and sheets as he laid the pregnant woman in the back seat of his patrol car.

"Being a police officer, I don't think your mind is really set on delivering kids, especially being in highway patrol, you're used to locking people up," Officer Charles Waters said.

Officer Pembrooke said he helped the baby along as his back-up showed up at the scene.

"When I was holding the baby, it looked like it was kind of pale-skinned and it wasn't making any noises and I wasn't sure if it was breathing," Officer Pembrooke said.

The officer said he gave the baby a little smack on its backside and it began crying

"It started crying and I was happy, I realized the baby was alive and everything was going fine," Office Pembrooke said.

The mother and her newborn boy were then transported to Temple University Hospital. Both are expected to be OK.
