Dramatic Delaware Water Rescue Caught On Tape

NEW CASTLE, Del. (CBS 3) ― Crews made a dramatic rescue in Delaware after a teen became caught up in a strong current while swimming in a river Thursday afternoon.

A 17-year-old was swimming in the Brandywine River when the current became too strong. The teen was able to grab hold of a rock when he became too exhausted to swim anymore.

Rescue crews arrived and threw a rope to the teen; he was able to hold on for awhile until he lost his footing.

Members of the New Castle County special operations team were then forced to enter the water.

Rescuer Chris Doyle was able to safely walk the teen to shore, but a second rescuer lost his footing and went underwater several times as he battled the current.

Doyle was only a few feet away, but he was unable to reach his colleague.

"A little scared, the current can keep you under," Doyle explained.

The second rescuer was able to float down stream and eventually made it back to shore.

Cpl. Jeffrey Whitmarsh said the teen suffered some mild hypothermia but he is expected to be OK.
