Police: Money Woes Led To Delco. Murder-Suicide

HAVERTOWN, Pa. (CBS 3) ― A failing business is why police believe a Delaware County man shot and killed his wife, then turned the gun on himself.

Police say Derrick Maylock, 66, killed his wife Suzy, 63, then shot himself in an apparent murder-suicide.

Police were called to the Maylock's apartment in the 1300 block of Edgewood Road in Haverford Township around 9:30 Monday morning. An employee at an auto parts business Maylock ran on the first floor of his home found a note that explained why he wanted to kill himself and his wife.

"How he was despondent, his business was failing, he had no goals left to live," said Haverford Township deputy Police Chief John Viola. He said "he owned nothing and was in failing health and said he was going to kill himself."

Police found the bodies of Derrick and Suzy Maylock in their bed inside their apartment. Both died of a single gunshot wound.

"I was taken aback. I was devastated. I couldn't believe it," said Chris Connell, owner of the Pig and Whistle Deli next door to the Maylock's home. "I'd walk in the back and he [Derrick] would say 'Good morning sunshine!' I'd say 'Good morning Derrick. How are you this morning?'"

Police say Maylock left the note on a computer printer inside the business, called Herr Driveline.

A separate note on the front door said the business would be closed for two weeks, starting March 24.

"I think that business over the years just deteriorated down to nothing," said Viola. "According to the note, the business wasn't making any money. That type of business was gone and whatever else was there wasn't worth scrapping."

According to a sign on her car, Suzy Maylock worked as a realtor at the Century 21 office in Folsom.

"It is sad that people would get to the point to do something so drastic," said Anne Clemens, who's lived next door to the Maylocks for 25 years. "You'd think something else could be worked out."

Police say the Delaware County Medical Examiner ruled the deaths a murder-suicide and the investigation is now closed.
