Craigslist Robberies On The Rise In Philly

PHILADELPHIA (CBS 3) ― Philadelphia Police have issued a warning after a series of robberies apparently set up on a popular classifieds website. Investigators said three people have been robbed in recent months by suspects posing as sellers on Craigslist.

Police said at least three victims have set up transactions through Craigslist only to be ambushed when they meet the seller in person.

One victim, who wished to remain anonymous, told CBS 3 she had found a car for sale on the site and the seller offered to drive the victim to an auto tags store. According to the victim, the store turned out to be vacant and she was robbed her at gunpoint.

Another reported victim found a computer for sale and was told by the seller to meet on an East Falls street. When the victim arrived, he was ambushed at gunpoint.

The latest victim apparently agreed to meet at a home on Roberts Avenue after finding a television on Craigslist. The home turned out to be vacant and the victim was robbed of $800.

"Even Craigslist advises people not to respond to private homes. They want you to meet folks in public places," Captain Steve Glenn explained.

Authorities said would-be-buyers should take the warnings on Craigslist seriously. When meeting to complete a sale, police advise you take someone with you.

Detectives believe more people may have been victimized. It is unclear if the robberies are connected.

Craigslist officials could not be reached for comment.

Anyone with information is asked to call the North Detective division of Philadelphia Police at 215-686-3353.
