30 Years Later Problems Still Exist In A.C.

ATLANTIC CITY (CBS 3) ― It's been 30 years since casino gambling started in Atlantic City, and billions of dollars have changed the face of the resort.

But many of the same problems that gambling was designed to address remain today, including poverty and crime.

An Associated Press examination of the promises made by casino supporters finds that most were kept: tens of thousands of jobs, billions for state coffers, and a national name for New Jersey among gamblers and vacationers.

Tony Rodio, president of the first casino, Resorts Atlantic City, says casinos were never intended to cure all of Atlantic City's ills.

But Merceda Gooding, a college graduate seeking an entry-level management job at a casino, says all she can find are waitress or maid jobs.
