Surveillance Footage Released In Propane Thefts

WILLINGBORO, N.J. (CBS 3) ―

Police are investigating the theft of 40 propane tanks from a business on Route 130 in Willingboro, N.J.

The industrial sized tanks, weighing 80 pounds each, were taken from Energy Resources in Willingboro, sometime around 8:30 p.m. Monday evening.

The heavy tanks, which are usually transported by forklifts, are said to have contained about 33 pounds of propane each.

Energy Resources sells propane products such as gas grills and kerosene heaters. The stores owner worries that whoever took the tanks could use the tanks to harm.

"Basically it'd be used as bomb "said Steve Merksamer, the stores owner "propane is very highly explosive."

Because of the dangerous nature of propane, New Jersey's office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness has been informed of the robbery by the Burlington County Prosecutors office. The FBI has also been notified and is reviewing the case to determine who will handle the investigation.

Willingboro Police continue to look for motives and suspects in the theft.
