Vigil Held For Central Bucks South Student
WARRINGTON, Pa. (CBS 3) ―
Classmates and friends gathered Thursday evening for a candlelight vigil to remember a Central Bucks High School South student who was killed in a tragic car crash.
Alex Smolin, 16, was killed in a crash following the first day of school for upperclassmen Wednesday afternoon.
"She was very loving and compassionate, just loved to help people," Smolin's mom, Jennifer Johnstone said of her daughter.
Johnstone remembered the last thing she said to her daughter as she was rushing off to school Wednesday morning.
"She forgot her lunch, so I told her 'Alex, here's your lunch' and I gave her a kiss and told her to have a great day and I loved her and that was it."
Smolin was riding in the backseat of a car when it crashed on Street Road near Elbow Lane in Warrington at about 2:45 p.m.
The 17-year-old driver apparently over-corrected the vehicle after losing control on a sharp curve, causing the car to flip and strike a tree.
The female driver and a 16-year-old male passenger were taken to Abington Memorial Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
When asked what she would say to the 17-year-old driver, Johnstone said: "I'm glad that she's alive and to not take that for granted. And to just be careful."
The accident occurred approximately one mile from Central Bucks South.
Smolin's family is expected to organize a fund with all the proceeds going towards making that notoriously dangerous stretch of Street Road safer.
Smolin moved into the area recently from Florida with her mother. Several fellow students wore black to class Thursday and honored the teen's memory with a makeshift memorial.
A viewing for Alex Smolin will be held on Tue 10am to 11am at the Shelly Funeral Home in Warrington with a funeral to follow.
