A Bucks County couple has been charged with stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars from a non-profit soccer association that involved 700 children.
John and Barbara Fox turned themselves in late Wednesday afternoon and they have charged with stealing $250,000 from the Southampton Soccer Association over the course of nine years.
"These people are basically the Bonnie and Clyde of the Southampton Soccer Association, they stole a quarter of a million dollars for their own benefit and not the benefit of the kids," Bucks County Deputy District Attorney Gary Gambardella said.
The couple handled all of the financial aspects of the club and other board members said that is why they didn't suspect anything.
"We always ran an almost zero budget club and the way it was reported to us back at the board was it almost flat lined every year," Bill Clark said.
"If they took a quarter of a million dollars in one year, obviously it would have been noticed but these guys did it over a period of time and hid it," Bucks County District Attorney Diane Gibbons said.
The missing money was first discovered when the board wanted to make some improvements to the field and subsequently found there was no money left.
"It was just so easy, it's not easy paying your bills and there's a pot of money just sitting there and nobody's going to know you took it," Gibbons said.
The Fox's used the money to make home improvements, take family vacations and even pay for college tuition.
According to the D.A.'s office, they did pay back the stolen money by taking out a second mortgage on their home but they still face seven years in jail, if convicted.
