Coach Reid Breaks Silence On Family Struggles
PHILADELPHIA (CBS 3) ―
Philadelphia Eagles Coach Andy Reid is breaking his silence regarding the recent arrests of his drug addicted sons.
In
Philadelphia Magazine's January issue, on newsstands December 26, Andy Reid and his wife, Tammy, discuss for the first time the arrests of
Britt, 22, and
Garrett, 24.
According to the magazine's
Web site, the Reids discuss Garrett's addiction to drugs and how the family is coping with the media frenzy and negative attention.
Philadelphia Magazine Editor Larry Platt said the story is comprehensive;
a personal profile of a highly visible family that struggled with addiction for
five years.
"Anyone with children cannot help but feel for this family,"
Platt said. "As Andy says, we were dealing with this through Super Bowls, through
NFC Championship games, so it did not interfere on the gridiron."
According to
www.phillymag.com, Coach Reid also addresses the speculation he will soon resign and to that Reid responds, "As long as I can do my job to the best of my ability, I would love to be an Eagle."
Late Thursday, Reid released a statement regarding his decision to cooperate with Philadelphia Magazine:
"For the last several months, Tammy and I have struggled with the proper way to handle our family's personal situation in a public platform. As many of you know, I chose not to answer or field questions for various legal and personal reasons. I wanted to instead focus on football-related matters.
However, as time has gone by, the tremendous level of support and interest that was shown by many people even by those without any interest in our football team was stunning. Tammy and I are very humbled and thankful for that. Obviously, we are not the only family that has or will at some point struggle with these situations in their own households. The outpouring of letters, emails, and phone messages made me realize that our personal situation, as difficult as it is, could actually have a positive impact on many other people's lives.
With that in mind, we decided that it was important to share some of our family's story. Because of open legal issues, there is still much we cannot discuss. The story is long and complex and we felt that a magazine was the best format to tell such a story. Therefore, we decided to let Philadelphia Magazine publish our story."
Reid further addressed the issue during his scheduled weekly
news conference on Friday.
"It was a way to share our story with others, we have
had tremendous support through this whole event," Reid said. "It was an opportunity before the season is over to make
sure everybody saw it."
The Reid's said they agreed to the interview for the sake of
other family's dealing with addiction.
As a way of saying thank you, Philadelphia Magazine has agreed
to make a donation to a charity designated by the Reid family.
