Five people were injured Friday night when a car went out of control outside Philadelphia Park Casino.
A man picked up his car from valet services at about 6:30 p.m. and lost control of the vehicle when it accelerated, officials said. The Lincoln Town Car ran into the back of an ambulance, which was at the facility on another call, jumped a curb and struck five pedestrians, said Darlene Monzo, vice president of marketing for the casino.
A 75-year-old man was trapped under the front of the car. He was extracted and airlifted to Temple University Hospital in Philadelphia in critical condition, Bensalem Public Safety Director Fred Harran said.
A man and woman were transported to St. Mary Medical Center in Langhorne, Pa. Hospital spokeswoman Kathleen Smith said the male was in good condition. The female was listed in serious condition.
The other casino patrons involved in the accident were taken to area hospitals, but there was no immediate word on their condition. The injuries are not considered life-threatening, police said.
The driver, a 74-year-old Trenton man, sustained minor injuries and was being questioned, officials said.
Police said alcohol and speed do not appear to be a factor in the accident.
The identities of those involved were not immediately released.
Monzo said accident could have been much worse.
"The pickup area is off to the left side of the casino, and it is less congested than the entrance," she said.
Nottingham Fire Chief Ron Harris agreed.
"He could have went through the doors into the casino itself," Harris said of the driver. "But for some reason, when the car got there, the car hit something and swerved and wedged itself between the structural column and the building."
So far, no charges have been filed in the incident.
